RAIL infrastructure including cable and valuable metals on the High Speed 1 (HS1) route is being protected from metal theft by innovative marking product SelectaDNA Trace.
The specially-formulated spray, which contains UV markers and coded metal particles, has already been used successfully by the UK’s national rail operator Network Rail. The company’s subsidiary Network Rail (High Speed) Ltd operates and maintains HS1.
HS1, officially known as the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, runs for 108 kilometres (67 miles) between London St Pancras and the UK end of the Channel Tunnel, through Kent.
Selectamark has been awarded a five year contract to forensically mark rail equipment such as copper cable, rail track and signal boxes across the HS1 route, and will be working in partnership with security solutions group LandSheriffs.

SelectaDNA Trace’s technology helps Police provide immediate forensic proof of where stolen metal has come from, enabling them to prosecute criminals successfully.
Network Rail has already used SelectaDNA Trace to deter metal theft on the Anglia route and has since extended its use to mark live and redundant cabling on the Kent and Sussex lines.
Internationally, SelectaDNA is being used by German national railway Deutsche Bahn and ProRail in the Netherlands.
