The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has teamed up with a local housing authority to tackle the problem of oil burner theft on an estate in Fermanagh.
To make the theft and subsequent disposal of the oil burners more difficult for thieves, the burners belonging to housing authority Housing Executive are being marked with SelectaDNA’s unique DNA coding system which can be traced back to the individual property it comes from.
Sgt Scott Fallis, the PSNI team leader, said: “Sometimes the first thing that residents notice is the failure of their home heating systems to operate in the mornings. This obviously leads to a great deal of inconvenience for householders, particularly in cold weather, as well as the expense to the property owner of having to replace the burners. “We hope that marking the burners will have a deterrent effect by reducing the ability of thieves to sell on the stolen goods.”
