SelectaDNA Featured in College of Policing Evaluation on Forensic Marking for Domestic Abuse

We are proud to share that SelectaDNA has been recognised in the College of Policing’s new evaluation of forensic marking for domestic abuse, published in September 2025.

The independent study explored how forensic marking can help protect survivors by deterring perpetrators and providing strong forensic evidence when needed. Police forces across England and Wales participated, deploying SelectaDNA Personal Defence Spray and other SelectaDNA products to safeguard victims.

Key findings from the evaluation

SelectaDNA was one of only two product ranges included in the evaluation. The report assessed sprays, gels/greases, and home protection kits, with SelectaDNA’s sprays and gels used across several forces. We're proud to see such positive early findings:

  • Reduction in repeat offending – Forensic marking was associated with a 22% reduction in reoffending incidents, providing promising early evidence.
  • Survivor reassurance – Victims reported increased feelings of safety and freedom, with many able to resume daily activities previously limited by fear.
  • Police investigations – When activated, forensic sprays and gels were seen to reduce investigation time and strengthen cases.
  • Trust and deterrence – Victims initially reported increased confidence in police, and perpetrator warnings were identified as a key deterrent.
  • High acceptability – 48 of 49 victims surveyed said they would feel confident using SelectaDNA sprays; smaller, portable spray canisters like our SelectaDNA Personal Defence Spray were particularly popular.

Police teams using SelectaDNA products

Since 2023, SelectaDNA has been working closely with Durham Constabulary and Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary to support their domestic abuse interventions. Our collaboration has focused on providing a range of forensic marking products that can be tailored to the specific needs of each force.

In Durham, SelectaDNA sprays and gels have been deployed by safeguarding and response officers as part of Operation Wicker. These products have helped protect survivors, provide forensic evidence when needed, and support officers in reducing repeat offending. Awareness of the products was strengthened through clear operational guidance and internal communications, helping to ensure consistent and effective use.

In Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, our sprays and gels have been rolled out alongside a domestic abuse champions network under Operation Sentry. The products were integrated into training and internal communications campaigns, enabling officers to offer survivors practical tools to enhance their safety while supporting investigations.

The range of products provided includes portable forensic spray canisters, gels and greases for marking surfaces such as door handles, gates, or vehicles, and smaller home protection kits with UV pens and warning stickers. This variety ensures that forces can offer solutions that meet the diverse needs of survivors while strengthening policing outcomes.

James Brown, Managing Director, said:

“We are pleased to see SelectaDNA included in this important evaluation by the College of Policing. Recognition at this level underlines the vital role our forensic marking solutions can play in tackling violence against women and girls. Our mission is to help protect vulnerable people and support police forces with proven, innovative technology - and this report validates that commitment.”

This recognition strengthens confidence in forensic marking technology as a practical tool to reduce harm, enhance survivor safety, and support policing outcomes.
